August 2026 VFACTS figures show battery electric vehicles hit a record 24.9% share of Australia's new car market for the month, and the record itself checks out completely. EVs (27,089 units) genuinely outsold petrol (25,824), diesel (23,608) and hybrids (18,662) individually that month, not just combined, beating the previous 23.5% record set in June. This is confirmed by the industry's own body, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, not just enthusiast reporting.

Where the correction sits: 24.9% is one strong month, not the year. The FCAI's own year-to-date figures show 154,304 BEVs sold against 811,388 total new vehicles sold across January to August 2026, a year-to-date share of roughly 19%, not one in four.

Why that gap matters: a single record month naturally gets quoted as if it describes where the whole market sits. It doesn't. Nineteen per cent year-to-date is still a genuinely strong, rising trend, up from about 17% mid-year, just a smaller number than the headline month suggests.

The bottom line: the record is real and worth reporting as such. Just don't mistake Australia's best month so far for Australia's average month, on the year-to-date numbers, it's closer to one in five new cars sold being electric, not one in four.
